Don't Forget the Kitchen: Clean Eating Recipes

By Olivia Kaiser on January 10, 2014

It seems that “getting fit” is almost always on people’s new year’s resolution list. And why not? It’s a great aspiration to want to go to the gym with the ultimate goal of looking better and feeling better. However logging time in the gym isn’t the only thing that is going to boost people up the ladder; what is logged in the kitchen also matters.

Today, social media outlets like Instagram, Twitter and Tumblr, are booming with “fit pages” and photos of fitness professionals. While it is great motivation, it is also extremely intimidating. These fitness celebrities are constantly pushing clean eating and meal prep (have you ever seen a meal prep? Talk about a lot of work and time). And I understand why: trying to justify eating a whole row of Oreos after doing a quick workout is a complete waste of sweating. However, when I think of clean eating I think of plain grilled chicken, boring lettuce, and nothing sweet. This isn’t necessarily true.

After searching around on Pinterest, I found a few recipes considered “clean eating” that don’t sound too terrifying.

Teriyaki Chicken

This recipe is great for those who love chicken stir-fry and need a quick meal to throw together. Put it with qunioa or brown rice, and you get an excellent source of complex-carbs.

Clean Mixed Berry Muffins

Muffins are a great on-the-go breakfast, but often aren’t the healthiest option. This recipe gives you the breakfast you want without the muffin top.

Lemon Dill Chicken Skewers

Though more of a summer recipe, this lemon dill chicken skewer looks delicious! Not to mention it would be great with some grilled vegetables.

Cucumber Dill Boat with Egg Salad

If you like cucumbers and egg salad, this would be a great recipe to give a go. It would work as a snack or an appetizer, that is both refreshing and energizing.

Chocolate Turtles

Though removing sweets from your diet is an important aspect to think about when trying to reach your fitness goal, removing them all together is a bit unrealistic (or at least for me it is). This recipe is great for chocolate lovers!

So for all of you who made the new year’s resolution to “get fit,” I applaud you! Just don’t forget to take that mentality to the grocery store and kitchen. Clean eating doesn’t need to be a nightmare; find recipes you like and try new things.
