5 Fashion Resolutions For 2015

By Kristen Peuvion on January 14, 2015

The start of the new year is a time of change for many. The long held tradition of making resolutions to better ourselves starts on the very first day of the year. Many of us choose to go the health route and resolve ourselves to eat healthier or exercise more.

Others of us choose to go the sentimental route, vowing to live every day to its fullest or write down something that makes us happy every day. And then there’s other people who don’t even bother making a resolution because they know they won’t stick to it.

But there’s another kind of resolution you can make that you probably haven’t even thought of yet: a fashion resolution!

It might sound crazy or a little silly, but resolutions are all about bettering yourself and being the best possible version of yourself. Why shouldn’t working on your personal style and fashion be included in that self-improvement?

So if you’re ready to make giant strides towards a better, more fashionable you, consider adding one (or all) of these five fashion goals to your resolution list for 2015.

Resolution 1: Clean out your closet, and keep it that way!

Typically people save cleaning out their closets for spring cleaning, but why not start out the new year with a completely fresh start. Everyone has things in their closet that they’ve never worn before or they haven’t worn in years.

Instead of hoarding these items for the next three years on the off chance that you might wear it sometime soon, get rid of anything you haven’t worn in the past year. If you haven’t worn something in the past year, you definitely won’t be wearing it in the near future.

Don’t just clean it out at the start of the year, though. Resolve that you will keep it clean year round and not fill it with more clothing that you’ll never wear. Your wallet and wardrobe will thank you.

Resolution 2: Wear more color.

My go-to outfit is an all black ensemble, so I’m more than guilty of needing to add this resolution to my list. It’s just super easy to throw on something that is all black or all neutral because we know that look is classic, timeless and versatile.

It’s not the most exciting look, though.

So this year, vow to add some more color to your wardrobe. Yes, basics are good to have in neutral colors, but all of those statement pieces you have should have some color in them. Whether it’s a great red coat or a funky orange sweater, you won’t be disappointed.

People will take a second look at you and your wardrobe will be much less bland.

Resolution 3: Invest in quality pieces.

In college, we don’t have the largest budget to work with, especially when it comes to clothes, so this resolution may sound tough. However, making this resolution doesn’t mean you need to break the bank and buy only designer pieces.

Instead, what I mean by quality pieces is a little less Forever 21 and a little more J. Crew. Stop filling your closet with $10 crap that will fall apart or shrink after a few washes and head to a store like J. Crew or Gap and spend a bit more money to get something that will last you longer than a month. It will probably save you more to splurge on these items rather than replacing the cheap items every other month.

Resolution 4: Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize!

One way to instantly look more fashionable and unique is by accessorizing, so in 2015 try adding at least one accessory to your outfit every day. Your clothes themselves say a lot about you, but how you style and accessorize them says even more.

The perfect necklace can take your plain white t-shirt to the next level, or a cool handbag can transform your little black dress from a classic look to something a bit funkier and more fun, all the while showing the world your unique take on what fashionable truly means.

Resolution 5: Plan your outfits ahead of time.

One reason celebrities look chic and glamorous 24/7 is because almost every single one of their outfits is methodically planned ahead of time by their stylists. So let’s all take a page out of their books and start doing the same.

You don’t need to have a stylist to look as fabulous as the celebs. The key to having a killer outfit every single day is by planning it ahead of time. By consciously picking out what you’re going to wear the night before, you’re giving yourself the time to truly think about how each piece will look together which will look a whole lot better than anything you could just throw together in the morning. So stop procrastinating and start planning ahead.

Just because we’re already two weeks into the new year doesn’t mean it’s too late to make a new resolution or add to your already existing list of resolutions. In the spirit of bettering yourself, consider adding one of these five fashion resolutions to your list for a better dressed you in 2015!
