5 Rappers You May Not Know, But Need To Hear

By Kevin Vote on August 5, 2015

If you’re a fan of rap, you know there’s a lot of rappers out there that you haven’t heard of. With that being said, here’s five of the best rappers you probably haven’t heard of, but need to listen to.

1. Young Roddy

Roddy is the heir apparent to underground king Curren$y’s musical empire, Jetlife. His series of “Good Sense” mix tapes has gained him a loyal fan base of listeners, and his success has only been sustained with recent releases such as “Route the Ruler” and “Legal Dealing.”

He has a very unique cadence that is displayed over superb beat selection. Although Roddy doesn’t release music too often, whenever he does it’s solid. Look for Roddy to be on next year’s XXL Freshman List if he can string together a few releases this year; he’s criminally underrated.

2. Remy Banks

Head of New York rap collective World’s Fair, Remy Banks has shown incredible growth with his second mix tape “higher.” His first mix tape “World Famous” was good, but “higher.” is on another level. Banks displays great beat selection, and brings an energy to his second mix tape that was very different from the energy he brought to his first mix tape.

It will be exciting to see what the burgeoning rap star releases next to follow up his “higher.” project.

3. CJ Fly

Co-founder of New York rap collective Pro Era, CJ Fly has only released one mix tape on his own, but it is spectacular. “Thee Way Eye See It” is a masterpiece of a first mix tape, which will leave fans and even the casual listener clamoring for more upon listening to it.

Fly is without a doubt the king of word play, and his mix tape is an interesting listen. He could also be a candidate to make the XXL Freshman List in the coming year, assuming he releases another project sometime soon.

4. Joey Fatts

Joey Fatts is a Long Beach native, and is part of rap collective Cutthroat Boyz. Fatts rose to prominence with his “Chipper Jones” series of mix tapes. Then he released his mix tape “Ill Street Blues” last year.

Not only is Fatts a rapper, but he is also a producer and excellent beat maker. He’s made beats for A$ap Rocky as well as Curren$y. Should Fatts keep developing as a rapper as well as a producer, he could be a star one day a la Mac Miller.

5. Retchy P

Retchy P is an up-and-coming rapper that has been co-signed by fellow rapper Action Bronson. Retchy P burst onto the scene with his mix tape “Polo Sporting Goods;” his most recent success, “Finesse The World,” can only be described using one word: grimy.

Retchy P tells street tales that would fascinate any listener, mostly because they’re true, which makes him a rare breed of rapper. He probably won’t make the XXL Freshman List this year, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see his name there in the future.
